What did the South Korean President Say After Listening to Adoptee’ Stories?
Overseas Koreans Agency, Korea: On June 19, President Lee Jae-Myung delivered a briefing that included remarks addressed to Korean adoptees living overseas. We invite you to watch the video to hear the President’s heartfelt commitments and learn more about the details of the briefing.
“Lastly, I would like to briefly speak about the time I spent with our overseas Koreans. I would like to say a few words about that. First, in Belgium, there are a great many Korean overseas adoptees. I had an opportunity to listen to their many stories that they have carried in their hearts for many years. The loneliness they experienced in a foreign land, their struggle with identity stemming from adoption, and their earnest hopes and efforts to find their biological families — as the President of the Republic of Korea, I was deeply moved and felt a profound sense of responsibility. I resolved to pay even closer attention to the issues facing our adopted overseas Koreans. Nearly 200,000 of our children were adopted abroad through various channels during difficult times. THroughout the adoption process, their upbringing overseas, and their current lives abroad, they have faced many hardships and challenges. I made a commitment to develop practical measures to support adopted overseas Koreans, and I conveyed that commitment directly to them. I also instructed the Overseas Koreans Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other relevant bodies, to review and implement the necessary measures. ” – South Korean President, Lee Jae-Myung

The Overseas Koreans Agency hosted the World Korean Adoptee Conference in May 2026 to strengthen ties between adoptees and their motherland and to foster greater interaction among Korean Adoptees Worldwide.
This collection, compiled by Korean adoptees, serves as a tribute to transracially adopted people sent all over the world. It has been hailed as the first book to allow Korean adoptees to speak freely since the pioneering of intercountry adoption after the Korean War.
